Even though New Line Cinema made a small fortune with director Adam Shankman’s “Hairspray”, it’s going to be awhile till we see a possible sequel.
That’s because at the recent press day for “17 Again” (which Shankman produced) Shankman said while “there are some really funny ideas, we don’t have a writer for it yet.” He went on to say, “the group - the producers and myself and the composers - decided on a direction that we want to go in. Because I have no interest in doing something that was going to, it was such a good experience for me that anything that would possibly impugn that experience was absolutely non-gratifying for me. We then sat down and said 'Hairspray 1' worked for this reason, why would we do 'Hairspray 2'? Because you start getting into 'Grease 2'…But there are very funny ideas that me and Mark came up with. John Waters wrote a treatment that was so insane. That was really a sequel to his version of the movie with all the cattle prods and the electro shock therapy, and seaweed. And Penny blew up the world at a certain point out of anger. It was this crazy thing. But we saw it as something to borrow from, so we took some of the less insane ideas. We are just hiring a writer now, and then we will get into it.”
A little while later, I asked Shankman about 3D and what he thought. He told the group of journalists “we were blown away with the tests we just did (for Step Up 3D) and seeing the dance in 3D, and an arm coming out and flips that are going by your head. It was such an incredible experience.”
Since he sounded excited about the footage he saw, I then asked if he would consider doing "Hairspray 2" in 3D. He said, “Yeah, that would be cool in 3D because it has a pop-sensibility. 3D should be relegated to things with a pop-sensibility because that’s the experience you want from those kinds of films. Anything you want really want to think about, you don’t want to see in 3D. You are always struck by the visual elements. Although, think about ‘No Country for Old Men’ in 3D. What would that be like?”
I have to say, I definitely agree with his thoughts on 3D. I don’t think 3D is great for every movie, but for certain films, I welcome it wholeheartedly. Anyway, since “Hairspray 2” is still being written, it’s going to be awhile till we hear any more news. Until then…http://www.collider.com/entertainment/news/article.asp?aid=11554&tcid=1

You can find Hairspray 2 on IMDB here.
And just on that subject, I found the following comment on their Hairspray 2 Message Board:
Amusing, but whether it's true or not...
But Zac dropping out of Footloose doesn't mean he's necessarily less likely to do HS2. He has said he's not done with musicals, they're two different projects and he'll have done a few more non-musicals by the time HS2 comes together for filming. It would probably have been difficult to fit in Footloose and HS2, so this has freed him up a bit. Plus, he's got Adam, Nikki, Lij and Amanda to come back to!
Obviously, guys, this isn't an official source. It's just a comment ;-)
So everything posted here thus far we have a direct source linking with the news we have gotten. But there are 2 pieces of news we are looking for sources to credit. The first was posted on hairspray2007 LJ back on 5/11/09:
John returning from Hairspray 2
There was no link in the post where the poster found this HS2 news. But our friend Dave who is also the co-mod for Nikki's board on fanforum.com remembers reading this article in a magazine at the hospital but doesn't remember the name of the publication. So if anyone can find a link or can scan this article we would really appreciate it .
|Despite Reports Saying he wont do Hairspray 2, John Travolta has revealed he IS to reprise his role as Edna Turnblad for Hairspray 2. The cast expected to make a return so far is :|
The second piece of news we are looking for is the interview Ben Lyons had interview Michelle Phieffer. Ben Lyons posted on his twitter about the interview to Adam Shankman on June 15th, 2009:
Our co-mod Mel, said her friend caught Ben's interview with Michelle on E! News (or one of those shows, could of been Daily 10 as well) but someone else said they caught it on E! News and he asked her about HS2 and she said the script wasn't done and that they were seeing where it went, but she sounded open.
But we can't find the video online anywhere or an E! article so if anyone has this interview can they please let us know? We never heard Michelle talk about the sequel so it would be good to have especially since the only thing we heard about Michelle was Adam's MTV Blog interview back last year that there was a chance her character might not be back. So this recent news seems positive :)
Collider had the chance to speak to director Adam Shankman, who is currently promoting "17 Again," about the upcoming "Hairspray" sequel, which has been rumored to be ready for Summer of next year.
"There are some really funny ideas, we don't have a writer for it yet," said Shankman. "But there are very funny ideas that me and Mark came up with. John Waters wrote a treatment that was so insane. That was really a sequel to his version of the movie. And Penny blew up the world at a certain point out of anger. It was this crazy thing. But we saw it as something to borrow from, so we took some of the less insane ideas. We are just hiring a writer now, and then we will get into it."
When asked if he would consider doing the sequel in 3-D, Shankman said: "Yeah, that would be cool in 3D because it has a pop-sensibility. 3D should be regulated to things with a pop-sensibility because that's the experience you want from those kinds of films. Anything you want really want to think about, you don't want to see in 3D. You are always struck by the visual elements. Although, think about 'No Country for Old Men' in 3D. What would that be like?"
Hairspray producer Niel Meron did an interview last year regarding his various projects including Hairspray 2 and Footloose.
It's full steam ahead for a summer production start for the new big screen "Footloose" starring Zac Efron and produced by the team behind the big screen "Hairspray," Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. That's the word from Meron, who adds, "He's a great kid. We love Zac. He's gifted. He brought us on board the movie, and we're glad to do whatever he wants us to do."
It's way too early to tell whether 21-year-old Zac might reprise his role as teen idol Link Larkin in their planned "Hairspray 2," however.
"We're just getting started on that. John delivered a treatment, and it's great," says Meron, speaking of "Hairspray" creator John Waters. His treatment reportedly has teen heroine Tracy Turnblad fending off detractors who want her to lose weight, while mom Edna does, in fact, trim down, only to find her husband looking at fat women — while Link adopts a Beatles-style moptop hairstyle that makes him break out. It'll be heavy on Sixties-style music.
"That's where we are right now," Meron says. "John is inspired, and he's the guiding voice. It's developing; it's all part of the creative process."
This article was posted before Zac dropped out of Footloose. Zac is now set to play the lead in Charlie St. Cloud which starts filming this month.
OK! Magazine recently spoke to Nikki at the Is Anybody there? premiere back in April about Hairspray 2:
Here comes Nikki Blonsky. It’s hard to believe we once sat beside her during a 2007 screening of The Last Mimzy. Insane what a star she has become!
What’s the update on the Hairspray sequel?
“I have no idea!” Nikki tells me. “I think Tracy’s gonna be the last one to find out. They’ll call me when they need me in rehearsals, I guess.”
Where would she like her character to go?
“I hope she gets to make out with Link some more,” she laughs.
